On the river banks of the Colentina

Urban and landscape development in Bucharest

Final Master Thesis with High Honours

Studio Pascal Urbain

The site of the project is situated on the riverbank of the Colentina, in north-east Bucharest.

This neighbourhood, mainly marked by its industrial, communist and then neo-liberalist urbanism is heterogeneous and conflictive. At the same time, the abandoned bank of the Dobroești Lake concentrates both savage burned land and classical aesthetics topos

This project starts with the ambition to domesticate the no man's land and to give structure to the city surrounding it.

The park is composed as a large surface having progressively different ambiances and qualities to let open diverse appropriations. Even if some built activities are placed upon, the projected park tries to emphasize the nature of the place more than replacing it.

The urban project is mainly marked by the continuation of the Soseaua Pantelimon. The street is redesigned to be able to be a linear public space, and industrial structures are integrated in the urban fabric. So productive and housing cities are no longer dissociated.

In the end of this boulevard, a public plaza is created, it connects transport infrastructures, the parks and two new buildings: a museum of Arts and Crafts and a School of woodworking. These two buildings are emphasizing the productive aspects of this area both by their architecture and their program. â€‹The project offers a reflexion from urban scale to structure details.

Headquarters of Textile company

With L. Enache and R. Bentabak

S9 Studio DE1-Axe3

The site, in the neighbourhood of the Catalans, in Marseille is very interesting because it presents a very diverse stratification of the landscape, sea, rocks, cliff, dense urban fabric and hills. This project is based on 3 slates of landscapes that are merging within the building: the headquarters of a textile company. The composition of the plans is thought through the landscape and the building in one unity. The building is marked by an atrium and loggias that, at each level, give a special orientation to the different functions of the program.

The challenge of the exercice was to involve principles learnt upon italian suburban villas of the XVIth century into the project. We reinvested this knowledge to establish the relation between the landscape and the building and to conceive the representational spaces

ZAC de la Chapelle 2017

With S. Hardy

S8 Studio AVT (Architecture, city and territory

Regarding to a territory highly damaged by the expansion of the individual housing during the XXth century, the construction of a new neighbourhood is thought in a dynamic of revitalization of La Bouilladisse.

This new neighbourhood relies on the elements of the landscape and uses context. The woods, the rivers, the topography have guided the implantation of the constructions. The coming of a tram gives the opportunity of the creation of a new public place - at the edge of multiple uses - like an echo to the life spaces of the city centre. These centres are connected by a promenade, following the Valdonne's way, furnished by leisure structures.

The public spaces, declined in various scales and qualites, allow cohesion between diverse typologies and uses.

The outdoor spaces are qualified in urban public space, natural public space, intermediary public space, and private outdoor. Each quality invites to different practices, between moving space, break space or extension of the housing.

The project combines multiple programms : industry, agriculture, education, housing, retail and offices.

It undermines the ways of living the suburbs, in alternative models. Qualities of the countryside and the living-together typical of the urban are combined in this project.

La portée 2016

With S. Sauvan and R. Poulain

S7 Studio Lab 43

The project is situated in the îlot XXL district, key-part of the urban project Euromed 2 in Marseille. The purpose is to increase the density in the neighborhood, so that this district appears more dynamic and attractive within the townscape.

The construction contains a covered public space which could be able to host various events and be transformed into a theatre. The construction is situated opposite the park and links it with the southern part of the block. The functions related to the theatre are located both in the underground and the superior parts of the building. Additionally, there are studios and flats.

The steel grame floorings are suspended to four concrete porticoes. The programs are organised around patios to express the idea of social gathering. The second skin of metal canvas unites the complete superior part of the building. This skin serves as a mashrabiyya and heat buffer. This very simple structure with large free surfaces allows mutability of the architectural plan.

Città nell'Arsenale 2016

S6 Rafael Soler Marquez

After walking through Venice and providing an urban and architectural analysis of the city, more precisely of the Arsenal, the task is to create a centre with temporary accommodation for tourists, which should be organised differently from the classical hotel.

The idea of the project is to integrate the city into the Arsenal by inserting it into the zone that is still reserved for the navy along the border with the neighbourhood of Celestia. The project uses historical structure to host large equipments, aimed at tourists and Venetian inhabitants. A new gate in the nothern part and the historical gate of the Lions will be opened.

The tourists' accomodations define the space into streets, places and fondamenta. In this way, the Arsenal is integrated into the city by an open process of colonisation.

Vivir en la Dehesa del Generalife 2015

S5 Rafael Soler Marquez

The plan of the project intends a centre of investigation and apartments for the researchers of landscape and History in the Dehesa del Generalife, in Granada. The Dehesa del Generalife is the hill that is dominating the Alhambra and its surface is strongly marked by the ancient irrigation system of the fortress. The project will contain spaces and rooms that slide, fitting in with the topography of the hill by creating terraces in order to generate views if the river Darro or the abbey of the hill Sacromonte. The apartments are asociated with work and common leisure spaces. The different rooms are connected with each other by stairs, a spinal column that creates a stable unity.

Densificar Santiago de Chile 2015

with J. Wieser and J. M. Martinez Rodriguez

Urbanism S5 D. Cabrera Manzano and F. J. Abarca Alvarez

Due to a profound analysis of the city of Santiago de Chile during the whole semester, the exercise started from the assumption that the population of this city doubled within a short space of time.

The main idea of our project includes the new distributions of city centers, gathered by an extension of the actual transport network, to reduce the current polarization.

These centers should be connected with each other by means of public transport. The example of the actual administrative and commercial center illustrates the problem of the high density of urban structures in the city in more detail. Our proposal, at each scale, is to mix the different uses, considering a change in habits and typologies.

The project plan invades abandonned spaces, creating new public spaces and economic activity in the hearts of urban blocks and the roofs.

Danser à la Corderie 2015

S4 Yvann Pluskwa

The dance centre includes a danse school, apartments for the athletes and artists, rehearsal studios and a performance hall. The project's process has been based on artistic references that all explore the notions of continuity of space, demultiplication, dematerialization and depth.

The construction of this project will develop on the basis of different levels, plateaux that interlock with each other, holes and files of pools. The light is manipulated by reflections on the water surfaces and reflecting, transparent or translucent glass surfaces. Finally, it is a project that reaches its vividness through the movement of the visitor and the light.

Inclusion - Exclusion 2014

S3 Christelle Marchiaro

In the harbour of the Madrague de Montredon, three families buy a land parcel that they want to share.

The project is developed on the idea of belonging and hierarchy of spaces. A peripheral wall incorporates the consistance of the project. The project winds round itself and the landscape. The exterior contact is full out of this shell. The whole path in the three housings plays with this ambiguity interior-exterior with flushings and crossings of the "strong" wall, embodied by concrete, while the "weak"walls are in wood.

The project explore three different typologies, the minimal studio, the large apartment 2 pieces and the duplex family flat.

Logement d'artiste à l'hôpital Caroline 2014

S2 Jean-Michel Fradkin

The Hospital Caroline is an ancient lazaretto, created by Penchaud in 1923, under the statements of Durand, on the Isle of the Frioul, in Marseille. The command is to create housing and artist's studio inside the ruins of the hospital.

The stone ruins are left unaffected while pieces of corten steel are inserted in the diferents spaces to host the new functionalities. The different studios are destinated at different practices and are inspired by different pieces of art (the ceiling of the music room, retakes the Laszlo Moholy Nagy's photograms, and the exhibition space is composed by the music score of the Prokoviev's Dance of Knights.

It is an heteroclite project where are experimented various works of displacement and lights.

Le cabanon polychrome 2014

S1 Etienne Léna

From an analytic work on the Le Corbusier's Cabanon of Roquebrune Cap-Martin, the purpose is to realise a minimal shed of less than 23 m², of a maximal height of 5,3m, to host two adults in the calanques of Marseille.

It is a path where expansions, views and colours qualify spaces. In the spirit of minimal housing, the spaces interweave and the whole shed is confunded with the furniture.
