Stadteingang West

Masterplan for the city entrance of Berlin, Competition, 2024

Henning Larsen

The Berlin West Entrance stands as one of the city's last major brownfield sites. Intersected by highways and railway lines, it is heterogeneous yet a significant transportation hub. Nature and landscape play a defining role through biotopes along the infrastructure and allotment gardens.

Within this context, we define three overarching goals  for a future-proof city:

  1. Resilient, adaptable, and just - the city functions even under extreme conditions.

  2. Empathetic - a city that considers the needs of both its residents and nature, providing a high quality of life.

  3. Social and spatial proximity is its strength, fostering synergies between diverse functions.

From these, we derive the concept of the "Productive City" for the West Entrance, stemming from the unique location of the planning area along the infrastructure, spanning the concept of productivity in all layers of the project beyond functionality.
